I was especially drawn to psychiatric nursing as this is where I first started my career after graduating in 1977 from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. I have a deep empathy for those suffering with mental illness and a sincere desire to show them acceptance and dignity.
I have always felt very strongly about the counseling experience and have earnestly tried to encourage my friends, family and patients to seek it out when their struggles were starting to get too heavy.
I believe sharing your feelings, whether they be anger, sadness, frustration, or hopelessness with another person is extremely important to the healing process.
My faith has always been a very strong part of my life and has helped me get through many of my own trials and tribulations. This is why I wanted to attend a Christian University to get my master’s degree in counseling. It has trained me to help people rely on God or their own higher power and receive that power and strength to change. I respect any client in their religious views and never impose my beliefs on anyone, but I will happily explore spirituality within the healing process.
My client focus is with the elderly population, adults, children (10 and up) and adolescents. My treatment therapy preferences are Cognitive Behavioral, Mindfulness-based, Motivational, Psychodynamic, Interpersonal, Integrative, Humanistic, Transpersonal, Narrative, Multicultural, Culturally Sensitive, Solution Focused Brief therapy, Eclectic, Acceptance and Commitment, Art Therapy, Attachment-based, Coaching, Dialectical, and Psychological Testing and Evaluation.
I find much relaxation in gardening, listening to ocean waves on a beach and spend as much time as I am able visiting with elderly friends whom are ill at home or in nursing homes. I also enjoy traveling and am an avid Bryan Wilson fan. I am greatly looking forward to spending time with my first grandchild whom will be born in July.
I would truly be honored to sit down with you and share your pain. I am a very patient, empathetic person and promise to give you my full attention and help you to the best of my ability.
