Counseling Philosophy: “There’s nothing to fear but fear itself”I believe therapy is a tool used to promote healing and self-awareness. Successful change starts with the will and motivation as an individual to gain insight as a person and focus on changes that promote a healthy and happier life. My approach as a therapist is to provide a supportive and safe environment while utilizing cognitive behavioral techniques. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a goal-oriented treatment that encourages one to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and help change the way we feel. My approach is culturally-sensitive, non-judgmental, and strength-based. I enjoy using humor as a way to establish rapport with my clients and to make therapy more comfortable. I also incorporate existential therapy in order to focus on the human condition as a whole and to highlight our capabilities encouraging us to take responsibility for our successes. Therapy is client-focused and designed towards the needs and goals of the client and, as a therapist, I am here to help you achieve those goals.
Training and Experience:I have been practicing in the field psychology for over 10 years. My formal training began when I obtained my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) double majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. I have always had a passion for psychology and criminal justice and UIC provided the opportunity to major in both areas. I interned with the domestic violence shelter Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC) and completed 40 hours of domestic violence training. My role at CAWC included providing individual therapy and facilitating groups with victims of domestic violence, which included, both adults and children.
After completing my undergraduate career, I attended The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and majored in Forensic Psychology. Forensic psychology is the interaction of psychology and the law. I have worked as a child welfare clinician at Association House of Chicago providing individual therapy to children with a history of physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse. I have worked as Mental Health Specialist at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center providing individual therapy and group therapy to detained adolescents and I have also worked as a Mental Health Specialist III at Cook County Department of Corrections.
I have worked as a clinician in a variety of settings, which includes: domestic violence, refugees and victims of trafficking, child welfare, hospital settings, and corrections. I have provided individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy in a private practice setting and have worked with children, adolescents, and adults. My goal for my clients is to help gain insight into cognitive distortions and provide the tools needed to cope with life stressors and transitional issues in a healthy manner. I am certified in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) and I am also fluent in Spanish.
Hobbies:During my free time I enjoy spending time with my family. I am an animal lover and I have two dogs and two cats that keep me busy. I love to cook and I am always excited to try new recipes. I am an advocate for self-care and I find running and swimming to be relaxing. I love all genres of music but 80’s and 90’s music tend to be my favorite because it is nostalgic. I look forward to traveling whenever there is an opportunity and to visit new parts of the world. Humor is my third language; I love to laugh and enjoy watching comedy shows in person or on television.
