When it comes to therapy, I believe my clients have a vast amount of resources already available to them; it’s my job to help us explore further. I take a holistic approach to therapy meaning I like to include all facets of a client’s life in order to treat the whole individual. Although we may discuss difficult topics and change can feel uncomfortable at times, therapy should be an enjoyable experience. My client’s and I are a team! If there is something they would like to discuss more, or something in the therapeutic process they would like to change, the choice is theirs.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor currently pursuing my Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor license. I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in the treatment of addiction disorders from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My clinical experience extends across all age groups as well as across a wide spectrum of mental health issues. In addition, my formal training includes community mental health, working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as teens and adolescents enmeshed in the criminal justice system.

One of my favorite things to do in my free time is travel. I caught the travel bug during my 4-months abroad in undergrad and I haven’t stopped traveling since. When I’m not exploring, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, listening to live music, and sitting outside with a good book. I am also an avid lover of sports, both playing them myself and watching the professionals.

As a therapist, I strive to provide a safe, comfortable and creative space to explore character and relational patterns, choices in thoughts and behaviors. I facilitate this through a nonjudgmental approach that promotes strengths and discovers latent potentials.  My passions are to work with children, pre-teens, adolescence, young adults, middle-aged adults and individuals with intellectual disabilities. I have extensive experience working through depression, anxiety, Bipolar, relational problems, behavioral and adjustment concerns using a client centered approach.

While working with children, preteens and adolescence, I like to develop creative mediums of therapy such as art, music and play therapy. I also like to utilize Pattern Focused Psychotherapy, Positive Psychology, Adlerian, Client Centered and Relational approaches with adolescence and adults.

Mindset: Inspiration for the process of therapy can be drawn from one of the best movie quotes of all time, “No! Try not! Do or Do Not, There is no try.” These are very powerful words telling people, especially to those in therapy that you must either willingly make your own necessary and sometimes critical changes in your life or you don’t.  Therapy is about actively regaining control of your personal energy.  Therapy is a collaborative approach to healing and well-being between a client and therapist.  The therapist helps guide a person into making better life decisions, but the client must intuitively think of new ways of managing their life stressors that they are comfortable starting and maintaining.  Clients not willing to make changes for themselves will continue to spin helplessly and hopelessly out of control.  The mind is constantly changing; people in therapy must also learn to continually adjust and adapt to new situations while keeping a mindful-eye on their past.

Education and Training: Dr. Hurley received his Master of Arts (MA) in General and Theoretical Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in Teaneck, New Jersey.  He graduated with a Doctoral Degree (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology (FIPP) in Springfield, Missouri.  At FIPP Dr. Hurley specialized in Marriage and Family Counseling.  Other areas of training include neuro-psychology, anger management, bio-feedback, and pre-marital counseling.  During his doctoral program he worked in a children’s psychiatric hospital.  His internship was in community mental health, and he participated in a national study on Schizophrenia.  Dr. Hurley’s post-doc residency was in substance abuse and rehabilitation.

After his post-doc residency he spent two years in private practice in Libertyville, IL.  Dr. Hurley then became the medical director for a Chicago based firm doing home health care delivering mental health therapy to Chicago’s south-side geriatric African-American population who live in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  Dr. Hurley has taught undergraduate students at Robert Morris College in Aurora, IL and graduate students at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.  He finds teaching to be a change of pace and a way of leading a new generation of therapists into the Health Services Industry.

His career path changed when he moved to Knoxville, TN.  Dr. Hurley was the Clinical Director for Mental Health for Tennessee’s main intake prison facility.  He worked with various criminals making sure that they received the help they needed and to minimize suicide attempts.  Dr. Hurley’s stance on his education, training, and career is to always strive to learn more, to do more, and to be the best therapist possible.

Therapeutic Stance: My approach to therapy with my clients is multi-faceted.  There is no one therapy to fit all.  I like to approach issues from a psycho-dynamic, family systems, CBT, Gestalt, existential, and medical stance.  When dealing with mental health disorders you have to consider the mind as well as the body for the root of a problem.  Therapy needs to be understandable by those who seek help and I have spent years refining my technique to help clients understand the issues they’re facing and the theories on how to resolve said issues.  People feel more comfortable and understood if you can talk to them in the various places they are currently.  I love to see individuals, couples, and groups in a calm, peaceful, and most importantly neutral environment.  I love to make presentations to groups for psycho-educational purposes as well.

Personal: Other psychological interests include neuro-psychology and brain imaging, music and movie therapy, sexual dysfunction and addictions, sports psychology, and psychopharmacology.  I hope to further my training in psychopharmacology in order to receive prescribing privileges in Illinois.  I love to use humor, music, movies and TV in sessions because they are examples of life experiences people can relate too.   I have a wonderful wife and family who make me happy, and who help me strive to be the best person I can be.

Laura is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her dietetic internship at the St. Loius VA Hospital. Laura became a dietitian because she wanted to help people live healthier lives through nutrition. She has a background in pediatric, prenatal, and postpartum nutrition, but has worked in many other areas of the field as well. She believes that there is no perfect food; everything in moderation is the goal. Everyone has a different lifestyle;  Laura will help you develop a plan that works for you.

Hello, I’m Alyssa and I am a Registered and Licensed dietitian.  I completed my Bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University in Family and Consumer Sciences with a focus in Food Nutrition Dietetics.  I then moved to Kansas City to complete my dietetic internship and Master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  During my internship, the bulk of my experience was working with children at a large pediatric hospital and also with a local school district.  I have worked with adults as well.  I contributed to a research project on the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet on older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.

My passion for dietetics comes from the belief that all foods can be eaten in moderation and how one specific diet will not work for every person.  I also am a very strong believer in how diet and exercise work hand in hand to improve our overall well-being.

When I moved back to the northwest suburbs of Chicago, I started working at Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant where I discovered my love for wine.   Other than reading up on new trends in nutrition, I enjoy working out, spending time with friends and family, trying new restaurants and binge-watching TV shows on Netflix.

I always congratulate clients if they have taken the first step of seeking therapy/counseling.  I believe that seeking treatment for oneself is a sign of health although many would associate it with pathology.  Therapy is certainly not about advice but about a safe place to bring issues and put them on the table.  A therapist is more of a “life witness” than a judge. Clients usually have enough judges and advice givers in their social  circle.  A good therapist provides resources, educational materials, positive mirroring, techniques to manage symptoms and hopefully joins with the client in acknowledging their world view.  A good therapist allows clients to learn from mistakes while providing guidelines to help avoid pitfalls. Providing a client with the tools to take charge of their own life rather than allow them to feel victimized goes beyond simply supportive therapy.  Certainly providing structure and setting goals is as central as healthy confrontation when appropriate.  None of this can happen, however, if the therapy is not person-centered and based on the individual client’s needs and perceptions.

Elizabeth is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. She obtained her Masters Degree from Benedictine University, and her B.S. in Psychology from North Central  College, Naperville. Elizabeth has worked in physician’s offices, with Catholic Charities and DCFS, in nursing and rehabilitation, in a village counseling center and shelter in Downers Grove and in several private practices including her own. She has extensive experience with adults, couples and senior citizens.

Elizabeth’s ongoing professional interests include Autism spectrum disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease and research regarding neurological testing advances especially with regard to ADHD. In addition to her work at Portrait Health Centers,  Elizabeth works as a Social Service Director in a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville. Elizabeth is single and has three grown children.

I have worked with many groups from different social and cultural backgrounds for over 15 years.  In that time, I have learned that making positive life changes comes from a non-judgmental and empathetic relationship between client and counselor, particularly when seeking help is one of the hardest parts of improving one’s life.  Using different eclectic counseling techniques such as Solution-based counseling, Cognitive Behavioral therapy, and Client Centered approaches, I can help a person clarify their obstacles and dreams to help them achieve their goals.

Throughout my career, I have worked with clients in methadone maintenance where individuals and group counseling was utilized.  While a counselor there, I dealt with young people seeking to regain the support of their parents and significant others.  Additionally, I have worked in residential treatment programs for persons with mental illness where coping with life's transitions, symptom control and returning to the community was stressed.  It is through past work that I have come to realize how important supportive environments and family systems are to individual recovery.

In my free time and to achieve balance, I enjoy hiking, cross country skiing and fitness.  As an art major in the past, I have maintained my appreciation for painting and photography. Additionally, as time permits, I enjoy traveling and sharing my experiences.
