Shannon feels that the relationship that she has with a client is the most important aspect of counseling.  With a safe and trusting environment, Shannon and her clients can collaboratively work through their specific needs together.  She believes that clients should feel as though they have power in counseling, in their decision-making and in their lives.  Shannon believes open and honest communication about ones' difficulties and the counseling process is key to success.  Shannon hopes to create a brave space where clients can be vulnerable, try new things and speak openly in a position where they feel accepted rather than judged.  Counseling can be uncomfortable, and it can also be fun and rewarding.  Shannon finds it important to bring humor to counseling in addition to the hard work that occurs at each session.

While Shannon uses different approaches and techniques with each client; a strengths-based approach is central to her work.  Everyone seeking treatment does so with strengths that continue to bring success throughout the journey. The first of these strengths is making an appointment and seeking the change for which they are ready. These strengths are often the driving force behind successes in treatment, help to build courage and tap into other strengths and assets.

Shannon has experience with and enjoys working with a range of clients both in terms of ages and reasons for seeking treatment. Shannon finds the counseling process an adventure and this is true for children, adolescents and adults of all ages. Forming a relationship and becoming a piece of someone’s life is an honor and Shannon strives to work just as hard as her clients throughout this process.

Shannon uses an eclectic orientation including aspects of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused, Mindfulness, Trauma-Informed, Strengths-Based, Person-Centered, Expressive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and others.  This is important to Shannon because each individual is different, and Shannon does not believe that one orientation can encompass the entirety of a person. What works for one person will not work equally for another.  Clients are willing to be open and flexible with Shannon, and Shannon owes the same to them.

Shannon graduated from Adler University with a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a CACREP accredited program. She also received domestic violence training through the Illinois Certified Domestic Violence Prevention Board.  She has experience working in a variety of settings including Inpatient, Outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP), Partial Hospitalization (PHP), and forensic locations. She has experience with group therapy, individual therapy and family therapy.

Counseling Philosophy
I believe that positive change can occur when we are given the space to explore the ways in which we cope with our life experiences. Seeking therapy is an honorable step towards living a more purposeful and balanced life.  Creating a safe, caring, non-judgmental environment enables clients to explore themselves through their unique experiences. My goal in therapy is to facilitate healing for individuals by looking at each person through a holistic, culturally sensitive, and strength-based lens. That means that therapy will be tailored to your specific needs and goals.

In therapy, I employ a wide-range of approaches personalized to client’s needs with a person-centered and strengths- based foundation.  In addition to the evidence based approaches, I utilize such as Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness Based Therapies (MBT), I also uses techniques from a mind-body approach for those who have experienced traumas, anxiety, LGBTQ-related issues, loss, and depression.

Training and Experience
My formal training began when I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Indiana University. There, I facilitated weekly groups for high-risk middle school aged girls. Additionally, I also worked with children at a preschool focusing on early childhood interventions. I went on to earn my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adler University where I had the pleasure of working with diverse populations exhibiting a wide-range of presenting issues. These include but are not limited to, working with severe trauma with children, adolescents, families, parents, and individual adults experiencing anxiety, life transitions, separation/divorce, personal/professional identity, religion/spirituality, depression, disordered eating, personality disorders, loss/grief, work related issues, and LGBTQ+ associated struggles. After earning my Masters, I have worked in non-profits providing counseling services to those who have experienced trauma and were challenged with significant life-transitions. She also successfully created an adolescent boys group at a high school in the Chicagoland community she served. My life-long goal is to continue to promote the infusion of healing with clients through a strong therapeutic partnership.

Hobbies
I have a love for music, dance, nature, animals, and exploring new parts of the world.  In my free time, I usually try out a new recipe, read about new research, listen to music or watch a new show/documentary.  I also loves learning about ways to better balance work and life and has found yoga to be a great escape.

My Philosophy/Approach: I use a relationship-based, client-centered, integrative, collaborative, and trauma-informed approach to counseling. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), a newer yet very effective therapy that is predominantly used to treat trauma but has shown great success in easing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other concerns as well. I consider all domains that make up a whole person- mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. It is my philosophy that with patience, determination, trust, and meaningful connection, insight and healing are attainable. I am passionate about supporting individuals while they navigate the various trials that occur in life. I find that it is helpful to validate strengths and motivations as a way to empower individuals to take control of their own lives. It is my goal as a therapist to help people begin to address their presenting issues by first providing them with unconditional support in a safe space. Together, we then work to uncover underlying sources of pain, connect the impact that thoughts and feelings have on behaviors, strengthen self-awareness and acceptance, explore and incorporate effective coping skills into daily living, and relieve distress to ultimately improve functioning and quality of life.

Education & Experience: I earned my B.A. in Sociology and B.M. in Music Performance from Northwestern University, and then my M.Ed. in Counseling from DePaul University, where I focused on both Clinical Mental Health Counseling as well as School Counseling. I have since become a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). I also hold a Professional Educator License with an endorsement as a School Counselor for ages Pre-K through 21. I have worked and volunteered in a variety of mental health settings, including a therapeutic residential school, a Chicago Public Schools K-8 school, a crisis call center for homeless youth, a nonprofit organization supporting grieving youth, and a LGBTQ+ community center. I am drawn to working with a diverse clientele and have experience with individuals ranging from preschool through adults. In the past I have facilitated group therapy and family therapy sessions, though currently I focus solely on individual therapy with clients.

More About Me: In addition to identifying as a committed lifelong learner, both personally as well as professionally, I am an avid musician, runner, nanny, reader, friend and family supporter.

I understand that change can be uncomfortable for many people, so creating a safe and confidential space for my clients is a top priority of mine. I see therapy as a collaborative process that is founded on the individual’s strengths and goals. I bring my knowledge and training into the room, just as the clients brings their life experiences with them. As I often say – you are the expert on your own life. I strive to assist clients with recognizing maladaptive patterns, developing healthy coping skills, and living fulfilling and balanced lives.

As a counselor, I utilize an integrative and client-centered approach and incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral skills and exercises into sessions. I admire the courage it takes for someone to ask for help, and I maintain a nonjudgmental outlook on each person I speak with. Therapy can be a highly rewarding journey, and I enjoy bearing witness to and being a part of each person’s growth.

I earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology at Santa Clara University in California, and then proceeded to earn my Masters in Counseling at Adler University in Chicago. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings with diverse populations of people. I have been a counselor at the Cook County Jail, inpatient facilities, and nonprofit mental health organizations. I have worked with teens and adults from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I now look forward to working alongside those who seek counseling through Portrait Health Centers.

Outside of the office, I love to explore restaurants around the city and try different types of food. When the weather permits, I try to make my way to the lakefront or walk along the river. Having my family live so close to me makes Chicago even better, and I’m lucky to be able to see them on a regular basis. Family, friends, fresh air, and food are absolutely what I enjoy the most.

I grew up overseas where I received my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I pursued my dreams and moved to Illinois where I received my master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Eastern Illinois University. For as long as I remember, I have always loved helping people and just being an active listener. Eventually, choosing therapy as a career came as a second nature to me. As a therapist, I have worked in hospitals, residential care as well as outpatient behavioral care settings, working with a range of clients/patients from children to older adults living with a variety of mental issues.

My approach to therapeutic alliance is integrative as well as person centered. I believe every person is unique in their own way and treatment planning is tailored towards your unique needs. I utilize evidence-based practices including but not limited to Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Sometimes it feels like we live in a fast-paced world where we may feel like time is passing us by or sometimes, we feel “stuck” in our daily routines and life may become sometimes mundane. I believe that awareness and bringing ourselves to the moment is one of the many ways we can lead satisfying lives.

I see myself as an easygoing person and this has become one of my strengths in self-care through my childhood and adulthood. In my downtime, I enjoy activities that stimulate creativity and relaxation. I particularly enjoy reading sci-fi novels, watching or playing basketball and playing the piano. I also love traveling and spending time with my wife and our puppy.
