Education and Experience:I received my Master’s Degree (MA) in Counseling Psychology as well as my BA in Psychology from Trinity Christian College. Prior to receiving my degree I worked as a CNA with elderly patients who suffered from Alzheimer’s and Dementia. In my undergrad coursework I specialized in working with children and teens with Special Needs, both behavioral and cognitive.  My previous counseling experiences have allowed me the chance to work with a variety of diagnoses, cultures and populations in several different settings that include but not limited to; individual, group, inpatient as well as outpatient. During my journey as a counselor I have developed a non-judgmental approach that creates a warm, empathic, genuine, and down-to-earth environment for clients to feel safe. I believe that it is important for the client and myself to build a trusting and respectful relationship so that the client is able to be open and honest about their needs and wants. This allows clients to better identify and develop their own path in achieving goals.

Therapeutic Approaches: I utilize various therapeutic techniques and approaches based on client need, including but not limited to; Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Art Therapy, Attachment-based, Coaching, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Culturally Sensitive, Dialectical (DBT), Eclectic, Family / Marital, Family Systems, Mindfulness-based (MBCT), Motivational Interviewing, Play Therapy, Psychodynamic, Transpersonal.

I work with children, teens, and adults to reach their treatment goals as well as cope with any issues they may face within a safe and accepting therapeutic environment.

I like to develop a treatment plan with the help of my client based on their individual goals and preferences with the guidance of what the current research shows is the best evidenced-based treatment for the presenting issue. In using a collaborative approach and working together we will be able to utilize your strengths to develop a treatment plan and goals that best fit your needs. I believe that it is important for clients to find a good balance in life and assist them in this journey.

In addition to counseling, I enjoy spending time with my husband and 5 children (ages 1-18), some activities I enjoy in my spare time include antiquing, crafting, binge watching shows, traveling, walking in nature, cuddling with my animals, listening to a variety of music, fishing, sporting events, massages and chocolate.

Philosophy:I believe in the counseling therapeutic process which is vital in the task of achieving change in one’s life. Everyone must cope with life experiences and in some instances those situations become too difficult to handle alone. It is a time in everyone’s life where one may need to obtain assistance with life stressors. There is no shame in seeking out help to take action that is needed for change. Counseling is the catalyst for one to become educated on how to deal with those challenging issues. My view is that counseling is a journey of self-exploration by the client meant to increase their level in understanding themselves in a more enlighten manner. I as a counselor will guide and facilitate that journey. Along that journey I will give essential advice to the client to discover the solutions for those issues. It is also my job to assist in identifying as well as developing and mobilizing the client’s own resources to solve those problems. The goal is to understand the problems the client is dealing with, and then to pursue effective treatment options. I will be supportive and sympathetic to help clients overcome self-imposed obstacles.

Training and Experience: My formal training in the counseling field comes from my graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. There I facilitated individual counseling with children, adolescents, and adults with an array of life dilemmas. I also have worked with individuals that were diagnosed with mental illness in group homes focusing on addressing transitioning to independent living from obtaining life skills. I have had the pleasure to work with diverse populations of different cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientation and genders that exhibit a wide range of presenting issues. I find counseling as a true calling to assist individuals in enhancing their quality of life. It is a true honor to me to become a part of my client’s lives as a partner to success toward their ultimate goals.

Hobbies:I have a true passion for world traveling in that I see it is as not just a voyage for enjoyment but a way to deepen my understanding of different subjects and people. I also have a love for practicing mediation to help me to continue to work on myself toward a higher state of being. By constantly working on me it helps me to be healthy mentally and emotionally. Another enjoy in my life is reading about such topics as research in my field along with strategies on how I can become a more effective counselor.

I graduated from Purdue University with my Bachelors in Psychology and a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. I had always known from a young age that I enjoyed working with children and adolescents, and I quickly figured out that Counseling was the right career path for me.  I always valued helping others and providing a supportive surrounding for those who may feel lost, alone or helpless. I earned my Masters from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, with concentrations in Children and Adolescents, and Latino Mental Health.  I believe that intervention, education and prevention are key to helping my clients live a healthy and happy life.

I practice from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach and like to integrate many different activities, such as music, art, play and reflective writings in my client’s treatment. Through my education and own personal experience, I recognize that one’s culture largely impacts their development as a person. In my treatment, I am mindful of my client’s culture and work to utilize that into their individual treatment.  In working with children and adolescents, I am a firm believer that their input and involvement in treatment is just as valuable as the adults’ in their life, and always make sure I include their own therapeutic goals in my treatment planning as well. As a therapist, I strive to provide a safe, healthy, kind, supportive, and collaborative environment for my clients.

I have experience in a community practice, working individually and in a group setting, with clients from age 5 and up, in both a school-based and outpatient therapeutic setting. I have worked in a Residential Treatment facility with adolescents from ages 12-19 who present with a multitude of presenting problems. I have worked with clients from various and different cultures and backgrounds.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and my dog, Keady. I like to go to concerts and plays and enjoy cheering on my favorite sports teams:  the Chicago White Sox and Purdue. I also enjoy cooking, reading and traveling.

Health is the ultimate wealth!   As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, my goal is to help others live their best lives by choosing the right foods to maintain their optimal mental and physical health.  Perseverance is key and staying motivated is a daily challenge. In a productive session, the client will have their nutrition questions answered and then discuss practical ways to assimilate that information into their daily routine.

My experiences as a Registered Dietitian include adult and pediatric hospitals as well as a private doctor’s office.  Working with a vast variety of clientele, I have come to realize that individualized guidance on a regular basis is key to staying focused and motivated, thus bringing about the desired health and nutrition goals. During our time together, I hope to motivate and inspire the client to make the necessary diet and lifestyle changes that will lead them to optimal health thus helping them live their very best life.
