I always congratulate clients if they have taken the first step of seeking therapy/counseling.  I believe that seeking treatment for oneself is a sign of health although many would associate it with pathology.  Therapy is certainly not about advice but about a safe place to bring issues and put them on the table.  A therapist is more of a “life witness” than a judge. Clients usually have enough judges and advice givers in their social  circle.  A good therapist provides resources, educational materials, positive mirroring, techniques to manage symptoms and hopefully joins with the client in acknowledging their world view.  A good therapist allows clients to learn from mistakes while providing guidelines to help avoid pitfalls. Providing a client with the tools to take charge of their own life rather than allow them to feel victimized goes beyond simply supportive therapy.  Certainly providing structure and setting goals is as central as healthy confrontation when appropriate.  None of this can happen, however, if the therapy is not person-centered and based on the individual client’s needs and perceptions.

Elizabeth is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. She obtained her Masters Degree from Benedictine University, and her B.S. in Psychology from North Central  College, Naperville. Elizabeth has worked in physician’s offices, with Catholic Charities and DCFS, in nursing and rehabilitation, in a village counseling center and shelter in Downers Grove and in several private practices including her own. She has extensive experience with adults, couples and senior citizens.

Elizabeth’s ongoing professional interests include Autism spectrum disorders, Alzheimer’s Disease and research regarding neurological testing advances especially with regard to ADHD. In addition to her work at Portrait Health Centers,  Elizabeth works as a Social Service Director in a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Naperville. Elizabeth is single and has three grown children.

My goal during therapy is to create an understanding and caring environment. I help my clients see the different paths available to them to better understand themselves and get the enjoyment out of life that they deserve. Each client is an individual with their own values, beliefs, and characteristics which I respect. Therapy should not be “cookie cutter”, but should take all areas of the individual into consideration. Whether someone has been struggling with their physical or mental health, job, or relationships we can work together to identify those areas that cause distress and how to approach them.

I received my Masters degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, with a emphasis in health psychology. I received my Bachelor degree in psychology and art from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. During my internship, I worked in community mental health doing therapy with adults, with a variety of concerns and diagnoses. After graduating with my masters, I worked in assisted living doing recreational therapy. Health has always been important to me. Learning how psychological, behavioral, and cultural aspects of our everyday contribute to physical health and illness are key as these to some degree affect us all.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, baking, crocheting, exercising, and spending time with my family.

I utilize an eclectic approach with clients with the understanding that each client’s needs are unique to them and change throughout the therapeutic process. While working with a client, I believe it is vital to integrate a multicultural and sensitive approach to the therapeutic processes. I will help navigate the therapeutic process with therapeutic techniques that include a Client Centered, Feminist, Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, Interpersonal, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Brief, and Trauma Focused method.

As the title implies, a Patient Coordinator is the guide who literally takes your hand and leads you through the initial evaluation and serves as your advocate when the team of specialists design personalized treatment plans.  Nobody should ever have to walk alone when learning about the treatment options and deciphering between myths and facts in healthcare.  A Portrait Health Patient Coordinator will educate you and your family on the latest treatment options and will work to ensure that the focus remains on identifying the cause, and not merely treating the outward symptoms the patient is experiencing.  Each Portrait Health Patient Coordinator is experienced in pediatric, adolescent, adult and senior care, and becomes your guide and advocate at Portrait Health Centers.  Contact us to speak with a Patient Coordinator.
