Education and Experience: I received my bachelor’s of music degree from Radford University and specialized in Music Therapy.  I completed a 6-month internship at a state psychiatric hospital in Virginia where I provided music therapy group and individual sessions to adult patients with severe and persistent mental illness.  After my internship I worked as a music therapist and provided music therapy groups for older adult clientele in assisted living facilities and in the community.  During this time in my career, I completed the training to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner to better serve the clients I was working with.  I continued my postgraduate education at Caldwell University where I earned my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.  My graduate internship experiences included working with college students with mental health needs and adults with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.  While in my graduate program, I was inducted into the Psi Chi International Honor Society for Psychology for my academic achievements.  After graduating, I worked full time at a private treatment center as a counselor providing group and individual therapy to individuals with substance use disorders.  I have counseled individuals, couples, families, and groups of all sizes.

Counseling Philosophy: My approach to therapy starts with creating a safe and accepting environment for clients to feel comfortable.  I use an integrated, holistic approach and incorporate techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).  I also focus on person-centered approaches to tailor the counseling experience to the individual, drawing upon other orientations such as Gestalt, Narrative, and Psychodynamic.  I am dedicated to helping individuals find creative ways to heal and feel support through life’s obstacles.
Upon request for telehealth clients, I also offer music therapy experiences to supplement counseling sessions. As a board-certified music therapist, I can play multiple instruments to use music interventions as a way to accomplish client’s individualized goals. For more information about music therapy, please visit the AMTA website at www.musictherapy.org.

About Me: In my time outside the office, I am…outside!  I enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities depending on the season, such as skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, yoga, trail running, and competitive horseback riding.  I make it a priority to engage in music for myself, and play in a rock band.  I love spending time with my chocolate lab, cooking, and traveling.

I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Criminology, from Rutgers University. During my graduate internships, I had the privilege of working with clients from a variety of different age groups and mental illnesses. By providing an understanding, judgment-free environment and utilizing compassion, empathy, and humor, I am able to develop a supportive counseling relationship to ensure success and an overall better sense of well-being for all of my clients. I typically engage with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-based (MBCT) practices, but I think it is also important to pull from a variety of other approaches.

In my spare time, I enjoy creative writing, golfing, hiking, and woodworking. I'm also a lover of art with film being my favorite type of art. I consider it a good week if I've had the chance to go to a movie theater.

Education and Experience:I earned my bachelor’s degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and my minor in American Sign Language from Kean University in 2013. I began my graduate school experience with Applied Behavior Analysis. However, after the untimely passing of two crucial family members, I found myself wondering how people dealt with grief, loss, adversity, and other major life influencers. I changed my graduate path into counseling and never looked back since. I fell into love with helping others work through difficult times in their life and reach the personal goals they established for themselves. After graduating, I worked in two alternative therapeutic schools for students, ranging from Pre-K to post-Secondary, with behavioral and emotional disturbances. After that, I transitioned into public education, where I have been for the last two years and my top priority is to provide counseling services to the elementary and middle school students to facilitate academic, social, and emotional success as well as provide crisis intervention and management when needed. I assist students with their goal-setting and decision- making skills, help develop effective and age-appropriate behavior patterns, improve communication and problem-solving skills, establish suitable and non-violent conflict resolution skills, teach college/career awareness and exploration, do academic planning and help implement referrals for outside services. I also educate and provide transitional skills to help in preparation for thriving in their community.

Counseling Philosophy:My personal and professional philosophy very much aligns with the inner vision most hold for themselves. Just as it is one’s objective tohave the tools to thrive in our ever-changing world, I believe in creating challenging and inspirational opportunities that promote intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth for all individuals. I believe in showing people that they can achieve anything that they put their minds and energy to. Too often, people hear that they “are not good at that” or “not smart enough for that”. When I hear that, I think “that person is not good at that YET”. As people, we are both intrinsically and extrinsically encouraged and motivated to follow and achieve our goals. Some need a little more motivation and encouragement, along with a lot of love and dedication. I am so lucky to work in an environment in which it is the staff’s responsibility in fostering such characteristics in a collaborative effort, such as with Portrait Health Center.

FunFacts and Hobbies:I am incredibly devoted to people and I am ridiculously dedicated to any cause I attach myself to. Even when not many others can see the point of sticking out a seemingly futile situation, I always find myself striving to hold on to make even the slightest of a difference for a better outcome. I don’t believe in giving up. I am a huge reader and love the classics. I have read Dante’s Divine Comedy in every English translation and especially love thriller novels. I enjoy listening to all types of music, bike riding, crocheting/knitting (very new at this), and exploring new trails. I’m also starting to become a movie lover, so I enjoy watching movies (old, new and international).

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, who has been licensed in the state of New Jersey for many years.   I obtained my Masters of Social Work from New York University.   During this time, I have worked exclusively in the field of behavioral health.   My experiences have given me the opportunity to meet individuals, who unaware of their inner strength, have by making tiny changes in their thoughts and actions, improved their joy of life.   Being witness to these positive changes I am in awe of the human spirit; remaining hopeful that individuals can grow and change.

As a social worker, I see the individual from a holistic point of view.  Together we evaluate the many levels of a situation, looking for patterns.  I am able to develop connections with individuals, because I am warm, accepting, non-judgmental, a exceptional listener and utilize humor as an important element in my style.  My approach to treatment is eclectic, using evidenced-based techniques and treatment models.

I work in partnership with my clients to assist them in further understanding their core beliefs which are often negative and make it very difficult to achieve successful life transitions.   The client’s I work with moveforward by utilizing more positive, healthy coping skills to lead happy and productive lives.  We work together to evaluate client’s strengths and areas of challenge, recognizing unproductive thinking and patterns, while developing new tools, revised toolsand shedding old tools that are no longer effective.  At the end of treatment clients have a toolboxof proven skills and an awareness of themselves which enables them to better deal with life’s day-to-day challenges.

In my time outside the office, I make sure I do self-care - I spend time with family and friends, mentoring others in an effort to give back to the community, as well as, paper crafting and travel.

Counseling Philosophy: When it comes to working with my clients, I pride myself on the establishment and development of therapeutic rapport most of all.  I believe that empathic regard and supportive, non-judgmental reflection combine to create the foundation of any counselor-client relationship, which if cemented and developed, can foster growth and/or change with any goal that clients are looking to work on.  I truly value the ability to provide clients with that compassionate rapport and interaction that allows them to advocate for and empower themselves.  Therefore, I primarily gravitate towards a Person-Centered therapeutic perspective; however, also drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Play Therapy and Solution Focused therapy.

About me: My hobbies include playing Pokemon Go, watching movies, shows, gaming, traveling, trying new cuisines, and laughing.  I enjoy both meeting new people and spending time with those close to me.

Therapeutic Philosophy
My counseling philosophy is rooted in the concept of establishing a safe space that is non-judgmental, where clients can heal and grow at their own pace.  My approach to therapy is multimodal. I am confident in the thought that utilizing different types of therapy can be more beneficial for therapeutic growth and change. I do lean towards the humanistic approach to counseling, which believes that people are basically good, and have an innate need to make themselves and the world better. I work with each client to build a strong therapeutic alliance utilizing empathetic dialogue, to develop a unique therapeutic plan that is shaped by each client’s own personal needs and goals.  I try to see the world as my clients see it, as such I listen empathically and without judgment.  My goal is to help people to find their personal worth and to help them understand that they have the ability to overcome hardship, pain and despair. Within this framework and within an environment of compassion and tolerance, I make sure that my clients feel heard and respected, and that we act as joint participants in their therapeutic journey.

As the title implies, a Patient Coordinator is the guide who literally takes your hand and leads you through the initial evaluation and serves as your advocate when the team of specialists design personalized treatment plans.  Nobody should ever have to walk alone when learning about the treatment options and deciphering between myths and facts in healthcare.  A Portrait Health Patient Coordinator will educate you and your family on the latest treatment options and will work to ensure that the focus remains on identifying the cause, and not merely treating the outward symptoms the patient is experiencing.  Each Portrait Health Patient Coordinator is experienced in pediatric, adolescent, adult and senior care, and becomes your guide and advocate at Portrait Health Centers.  Contact us to speak with a Patient Coordinator.
