Therapy is a creative process built on a strong partnership. I believe the best outcomes start with honoring your own experiences, inherent wisdom and strengths. I believe that forging a path toward healing is best accomplished through compassionate understanding and acceptance of the past. My job is not to judge. It is to listen, support and guide you in understanding the areas in your life that may need attention.  Together, we will identify goals and create a thoughtful, wise life plan in which healthy, effective change is possible.

As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Rockford, I work with a number of evidence- based treatments to help clients. My therapeutic framework is grounded in the area of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, in particular Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Additionally, I have a Master’s in Teaching and have spent many years as an educator and counselor in the public school setting working with at-risk students.

I strive to live in the present moment and utilize mindfulness meditation as a cornerstone of my own self-care practices. My interests include spending time in nature and with animals, reading, and achieving new personal goals. I own a registered therapy dog and believe in the power of animals to heal and comfort. The practice of therapy is endlessly fascinating, and I am passionate about keeping abreast of new ideas and practices in the counseling profession.

Hello, I’m Alyssa and I am a Registered and Licensed dietitian.  I completed my Bachelor’s degree at Illinois State University in Family and Consumer Sciences with a focus in Food Nutrition Dietetics.  I then moved to Kansas City to complete my dietetic internship and Master’s degree in Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of Kansas Medical Center.  During my internship, the bulk of my experience was working with children at a large pediatric hospital and also with a local school district.  I have worked with adults as well.  I contributed to a research project on the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet on older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.

My passion for dietetics comes from the belief that all foods can be eaten in moderation and how one specific diet will not work for every person.  I also am a very strong believer in how diet and exercise work hand in hand to improve our overall well-being.

When I moved back to the northwest suburbs of Chicago, I started working at Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant where I discovered my love for wine.   Other than reading up on new trends in nutrition, I enjoy working out, spending time with friends and family, trying new restaurants and binge-watching TV shows on Netflix.

I believe therapy is most effective upon creating a relationship that involves respect, trust, and a sense of safety in a non-judgmental and growth-stimulating environment. As a therapist, I strive to meet clients where they are at and to help solidify areas in which clients want to improve; I view working towards personal goals as an agreement between the client and myself. I see value in recognizing and building upon individual strengths and resources to promote resiliency and healing. I utilize empathic and strength-based approaches with an interest in person-centered, cognitive behavioral, narrative, and existential therapies. Essentially, I aim to create a welcoming, validating, and fully accepting therapeutic space to assist in exploration of emotions, thoughts, conflicts, and experiences. Further, I believe it is important to view everyone through an intersectional lens to identify the various social identities and roles in our lives and how they interact and impact each other. I strongly believe it is important to explore these dynamics as a way to gain understanding of oneself and to explore how the client and therapist can work as a team towards healing the whole as opposed to one specific part.

I received my Master’s of Science in Art Therapy with a concentration in Counseling from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Through graduate studies, I was fortunate enough to work with women experiencing substance abuse issues, individuals experiencing homelessness, and clients seeking treatment through private practice. In my clinical career, I work full time at a community agency with clients from all backgrounds and walks of life and have gained skills in practicing from a trauma-informed perspective. I am open to working with a variety of clients (ages three and up) and have special interest in working with women, children, and the LGBTQ+ population. I work in individual, family, and couple’s therapy sessions. I have been trained to use art therapy and traditional talk therapy interventions and aim to increase my skills in mindfulness practices and other expressive therapies (including play, sand tray, and movement).

In my life outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my partner, family, and friends as well as visiting new and loved places. My interests include reading, video games, movies and television, exercise, and art. I am a practicing artist and participate in shows as often as my schedule allows. I utilize art making for self-care, personal growth, and as a way of connecting with others. I volunteer with a local LGBTQ+ organization and am grateful for opportunities to connect with others in such a meaningful way. I love animals and currently have two cats (a mother and son duo). As being a therapist has changed the ways I look at my daily life, I read as much as I can on different therapeutic theories, techniques, and different types of research to help myself in growing both personally and professionally.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who is passionate about helping people to find healthy and effective solutions to their problems from within themselves. I provide a safe, confidential setting where there is no judgment, only acceptance of the unique individual you are.  I am adept at working with adolescents and adults, as individuals or in groups who are trying to rebuild life and establish a new “norm” after some type of life altering event.  The clients whom I have served range from 5 years old to 87 years young.   I primarily utilize CBT and DBT skills and techniques when working with adolescent and adult clients who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD and other anxiety disorders, addictions, and personality disorders. I take a holistic approach with my clients, which means that I realize that each person, each issue, operates within a system that is comprised of many parts. If one part is weak or worn out, then the others have to compensate, making the whole less effective than it could be. My goal is to help you, the client, identify and maximize your strengths, while also gaining insight into your triggers so that you can learn skills to help you cope and live a happier, healthier life.

I received my Master’s of Arts Degree in Community Counseling from Argosy University, in Schaumburg, Illinois. I have obtained specialized training in Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and in domestic partner abuse intervention and prevention.  I have worked in the mental health field for five years in both inpatient and outpatient facilities. Prior to my counseling career, I worked for twenty years in corporate America where I was a manager and a leader of change.

In addition to my position at Portrait, I also work full time as a Mental Health and Addictions Counselor for a community based agency in Rockford, Illinois. I have three grown children and two beautiful granddaughters whom I enjoy spending time with. When not busy with my career or with my family, I like reading, writing, thrift store shopping, dining out, and baking.  I am also an animal lover who would like to open up a sanctuary for homeless people and pets someday.

As the title implies, a Patient Coordinator is the guide who literally takes your hand and leads you through the initial evaluation and serves as your advocate when the team of specialists design personalized treatment plans.  Nobody should ever have to walk alone when learning about the treatment options and deciphering between myths and facts in healthcare.  A Portrait Health Patient Coordinator will educate you and your family on the latest treatment options and will work to ensure that the focus remains on identifying the cause, and not merely treating the outward symptoms the patient is experiencing.  Each Portrait Health Patient Coordinator is experienced in pediatric, adolescent, adult and senior care, and becomes your guide and advocate at Portrait Health Centers.  Contact us to speak with a Patient Coordinator.
