I am a Licensed Professional Counselor that enjoys working with a wide range of individuals in promoting their independence, decision making, and enhancing their quality of life.  I strive to empower and support every client in his/her own unique journey through life.  During your counseling experience, we will examine environmental factors that influence what may be impacting your life, assist you in pinpointing significant areas in life you want to change, and actively work to create interventions to modify those areas and see improvements.

My counseling approach is Applied Behavior Analysis; I believe that every individual can build skills, create opportunities, and improve his/her quality of life. Nobody gets through life alone and support, compassion, and openness is essential to empowering individuals into being successful within their own life journey.  I believe there is no such thing as a “fits all” philosophy in counseling and every individual has his/her own unique experiences and his/her own personalized interventions are always necessary; therefore, I use a variety of mediums in counseling sessions such as music, art, and clay, and explore the various interests of an individual to express him/herself.  My role in your counseling experience is to empower you to choose the best path for you, support you in creating interventions to create change, and for us to work together to move you towards your goals.

Some of my passions in life include the love of music; I played several instruments throughout my childhood and currently enjoy playing the violin during my leisure time.  Often times, I find that music created through instruments can be more expressive and beautiful than any sung lyric.  I also enjoy creating various food dishes and baking.  I find new recipes of foods that I love and recreate them adding 1 or 2 of my choice ingredients to make it my own.  I love experiences whether a new dining experience, sports event experience, or learning experience.  I consider myself a lifelong learner and believe that with each new life experience there is an opportunity to grow as a person.

Roxana decided to delve into the world of nutrition to get to the bottom of what real nutrition is all about. With all the ad-pollution, confusion, and "noise" about diets, nutrition, and the like, she just wanted to know the truth. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago for a B.S. in Human Nutrition and became a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Her training helps her appreciate how a healthy eating pattern can fuel the body, help it function right, and nourish our trillions of cells that constantly need to be maintained and replaced. This training gave her experience with a diverse population from pediatric patients to high-risk adults. It has also helped her to understand how nutrition can help at any stage of disease for a wide spectrum of diseases and conditions.

Her friends and family often hear her say "A healthy person is no accident." This is because she has seen it takes effort to achieve a healthy lifestyle. That is why her aim is to meet you where you are now and find the best plan tailored to your unique needs, goals, and lifestyle. She is here to share sound, science-based (and, in some cases, even personally-tested) advice and principles about nutrition and healthy eating. Her approach is to be as practical as possible and to help each client prepare for and succeed in overcoming the many challenges that appear along the way.

The 2.5 years she spent volunteering in Romania helped her develop a keen, enriched sense of cultural sensitivity. (It also gave her pleasant memories of gardening various fruits, vegetables, herbs, and crops with her grandmother, who lives in the Northern region of Transylvania).

Nutrition aside, Roxana enjoys sipping tea, reading, admiring nature, playing several of her favorite instruments (violin, piano, guitar, and drums), seeing live music, exploring new restaurants and cuisines in the world-class city she grew up in (Chicago), participating in a global educational volunteer work, and traveling to her favorite national parks and mountains for a great hike or a great snowboarding session with her dear friends and family.

Specialties:  Palliative care (comfort care) for individuals and families coping with terminal illnesses. Bereavement/grief issues due to expected and unexpected losses. Loss due to suicide, drug overdose, and accidental deaths. Post traumatic stress disorder,  bipolar disorder, depression, panic and anxiety disorders and anger management. Adult patients.

It is essential for people to feel they are able to manage their emotions and their emotions are not controlling their lives. “I’m bad, I’m weak, there is something wrong with me,” are mistaken ideas people have when they are suffering emotional pain. There is often shame and fear when individuals feel they need or are told “to get help”.  It is no different to seek counseling for emotional pain than to call the doctor when one breaks a leg or has the flu.

I have experience helping people get back in their “drivers seat” regarding their emotions. When people are confused or suffering with emotional pain they are particularly vulnerable to fear, anger, and helplessness. This is often accompanied by a sense of purposelessness and not caring about much.

As a therapist, I provide education, support, and comfort to maintain and improve functioning as well as maintain a person’s sense of feeling “normal”.  Most of my clients, at first, are worried about “being normal”, when in fact suffering emotional pain is normal and part of the human condition.

I have enjoyed a career as a therapist for over 20 years. I have found that in the midst of emotional pain there is an awareness and honesty that leads to an opportunity to improved quality of life.

My training and experience emphasize using cognitive and behavioral therapy with a strong focus on helping to change unproductive behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that keep an individual stuck in a cycle of pain and poor quality of life.

The goal: Education, understanding, support and helping to realize one’s personal strengths and unique gifts as human beings.

I also hold a Masters of Arts degree and a Bachelors degree from Varna Free University in Bulgaria. My professional experience includes both individual and group therapy. I practiced as a psychologist and psycho-educator for several years in Bulgaria. I have also worked as a counselor with  a very diverse range of college students in the USA. My approach is always related to the personal needs of the client.

Outside of work I enjoy gardening and growing my own vegetable. I love listening to music, reading and taking long outdoor walks. I find painting with oil colors highly rewarding. Cooking Bulgarian traditional dishes is another passion of mine.

Education and Experience:  For my graduate education, I attended Roosevelt University where I earned my M.A. degree in Clinical Psychology (Counseling Practice).  I completed my B.S. degree at Loyola University Chicago with a major in Psychology and a minor in Sociology.  I have worked in a therapeutic day school as well as in clinic-based settings.  I also volunteered in a substance-abuse prevention program for adolescents.  I have experience in treating a variety of different mental health diagnoses, primarily with children, adolescents, and the young-adult population.

My Philosophy: Exploring one’s mental health is important and fundamental to living a balanced life.  I believe in creating a compassionate and trusting environment for my clients to share their thoughts, which will in turn promote a safe space for exploring life’s challenges. I find that developing a strong rapport with my clients will help guide them to discover their own distinct coping skills.  I am passionate about helping clients with their personal growth in order for them to feel fulfilled in their daily lives.  My counseling approach utilizes an integrative array of therapeutic techniques to fit each individual’s unique needs.  This includes person-centered therapy in combination with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).  I also incorporate mindfulness strategies, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and solution-focused techniques.

About Me: Outside of the therapeutic setting, I enjoy playing the piano, singing, and spending time with my dogs.  I believe that self-care is important to harmonizing the work/life balance, so to achieve this I enjoy spending quality time with my family and attending yoga classes.  Living in the Chicagoland area my entire life, I also love to visit Lake Michigan and view the beautiful skyline.

As the title implies, a Patient Coordinator is the guide who literally takes your hand and leads you through the initial evaluation and serves as your advocate when the team of specialists design personalized treatment plans.  Nobody should ever have to walk alone when learning about the treatment options and deciphering between myths and facts in healthcare.  A Portrait Health Patient Coordinator will educate you and your family on the latest treatment options and will work to ensure that the focus remains on identifying the cause, and not merely treating the outward symptoms the patient is experiencing.  Each Portrait Health Patient Coordinator is experienced in pediatric, adolescent, adult and senior care, and becomes your guide and advocate at Portrait Health Centers.  Contact us to speak with a Patient Coordinator.
